Objective To investigate the mental health state of policeman and its related factors.Methods 339 policemen were recruited and asked to complete a number of rating scales including Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS),Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CESD),Life Event Scale (LES),Ways of Coping Scale,Social Support Scale,as well as an unstructured and a structured scale for duty-related stress.Results The policemen obtained higher SAS and CESD scores than the normal controls,most of them perceived duty-related stress.Possible factors affecting policemen's mental health were life events,ways of coping and social support.Conclusion The policemen had higher incidence of depression and anxiety which may be related to their job nature,life events,ways of coping,and social support.
