Objective: To explore the causal relationship and gender differences between peer victimization, peer rejection and externalizing problems and internalizing problems. Methods: A longitudinal investigation was conducted among 1040 junior high school adolescents from Beijing. Results: ① Peer victimization was positively associated with peer rejection, externalizing problems and internalizing problems in two years;② Peer victimization and peer rejection remained high stability, while externalizing problems and internalizing problems maintained weak stability for boys and girls across two years;③ Cross-lagged analysis revealed that significant mutually causal relationships between peer victimization, peer rejection and problems, which showed obvious gender differences. For boys, peer victimization in seventh grade predicted significantly externalizing problems in eighth grade, whereas internalizing problems in seventh grade significantly predicted peer rejection in eighth grade; For girls, the early peer victimization predicted later internalizing problems. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that peers victimization/rejection have a causal impact on externalizing/internalizing problems, which may,in turn, lead to peer rejection in future particularly in boys.
