Objective:The study aimed to explore the difference of brain grey matter volume in patients with unipolar and bipolar depression, which may help distinguishing the two diseases. Methods:The study recruited 17 patients with uni-polar depression, 19 patients with bipolar depression, and 28 healthy controls. Voxel-based morphometry(VBM) was used to preprocess structural images, and grey matter volume was obtained for each subject. Results:Unipolar depression and bi-polar depression showed the abnormal decreased grey matter volume in the right anterior cerebellum lobe. Unipolar depres-sion showed significant decreased grey matter volume in the right superior temporal gyrus compared to bipolar depression and healthy control. Conclusion:The decreased grey matter volume in the anterior cerebellum lobe may be a common neu-ro-substrate for both unipolar and bipolar depression, and the reduced grey matter volume in the right superior temporal gy-rus may specifically contribute to unipolar depression.
