Objective: To compare the state of mental health and coping strategies between the international students and Chinese college students. Methods: 68 international students in China and 68 age- and sex-matched Chinese college students in the Central South University were evaluated by use of the questionnaire on coping strategies and Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL -90). Results: Compared with Chinese college students, the international students in China had significantly different coping modes, most of whom often selected illusion, withdrawal and other negative coping mode (P< 0.05) when there were stressful events. Scores of both compulsion and interpersonal relationship stress factors were shown to be significantly higher than Chinese college students and Chinese young norm (P<0.05). Conclusion: The international students showed more compulsion, tense interpersonal relationship and anxiety symptoms, which suggested that we should pay more attention on the intervention in these aspects.
